In the past few days something that is really troubling me is the Journalism/Media.
It is really painful to see the media becoming a gossipmonger.
I just looked up at the ethics to be followed by every journalist. They are truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability.
I believe none of the above exist anymore as everyone wants to sell their stories to bring in public attention.
Public/Readers who buy the newspapers and magazines can be grouped under various categories and have varying interests. I really dont mind having a column for fun and gossips.
But I strongly believe the main focus of journalists must be to talk about the problems faced by a normal man and resolving the issues which probably he could not do it alone.
It is not just problems of individuals, we know as a world we are interlinked and how in one side of the world we have a big event is carried on and on the other end of the world a community is struggling to bring their voice out on how they were been cheated to lose all their property to some greedy people with power.
Last week I heard a story about girls being killed/raped for bringing out truth about their local gangsters. And lots of farmers are still dying in India every day due to huge loan they have and now it doesn't even appear in the news.
"Peepli Live" was a very beautiful movie which showed the reality of the present media at the moment and surprisingly it didnt trigger any change in the attitude of either us or the media.
I don't say it is journalists' sole responsibility to be a whistle blowers or only they have to resolve all the problems of the world.
Of course every individual in the world should do that. But being a journalist adds extra power as their stories are read all over the world. They should write about the truth that the world needs to know. The story is supposed to be accurate with no biased information.
Over recent years nothing is reliable. As you would have read about one of the major media company was brought before justice to put their opinion on the news.
As a reader I dont want to know about famous actor who sold her apartment in New York or I dont want to know if another public figure ditched her boy friend.
I would like to know how the famine stuck people in other part of the counrty been supported.
I would like to know how the people are struggling to get their property back from the landlords who stole from them illegally.
I would like to know how the government is suppressing the rebels by not giving them their freedom.
I would like to know how a particula religious community is being illtreated to give up the religion.
I would also like to know how rich people get richer and escape from any crime they commit and poor people get caught for stealing apples and mangoes.
I dont say i encourage that stealing but until we really bring some balance in the world it is not fair to just punish poor people.
The reason I'm asking journalist to open up is they have rights and power to do so much of magic for the people who are in need.It is a real shame for the whole community.
We should all write to the news editors when they publish a girl being raped/attire of the princess or the president in the front paper asking them to put more work on investigating the cause of the rape or the attitude behind it rather than making that girl's life miserable.
I agree more issues are brought to limelight everyday but they disppear in a few days and the affected person is affected forver.
We can ask the editors to followup on certain pressing issues until it is resolved.
I dont want to put all the pressure on to Media. I want everyone of us to be more responsible and we should request and get what we want from them.
I'm sure if we all ask for quality news we will get them.
It is high time we realise our rights and exercise them. It is not for any particular nation. Let us start thinking the whole world as our own.
